Thoughts From the Road

This tour has been a bit of a whirlwind from the outset, but I’ve finally had a quiet morning in Melfort, SK to gather my thoughts and reflect on events thus far. Things began in Arborg, Manitoba to a small but enthusiastic audience. My belief in the power of music and its ability to touch people of all backgrounds was confirmed by a quote from one member of the audience, who told me, with tears in his eyes: “You are blessed above all men, because your gift brings joy to people wherever you go.” Certainly a sober reminder of the artist’s duty to humbly share their gifts without pretense. The music can and does speak for itself.

This leads me to one of my biggest revelations so far on the tour. I always have a bit of insecurity presenting Medtner’s music publicly despite my great personal passion for it. Invariably the old criticisms of dense incomprehensibility and resultant boredom spring to my mind when bringing this music to an audience unfamiliar with classical music. Yet, without fail the Sonata-Romantica has captured the imaginations of audiences at each of the stops on this tour. One woman even told me she couldn’t breathe until the piece was over! Needless to say, my faith that Medtner’s works can reach beyond the obscure corners of pianophilia to the masses has been strengthened. I’m excited to continue hearing people’s responses to this beautiful, richly complex music.

The warmth of audiences generally, has been a constant throughout the duration of my travels. This enthusiasm and support has been very encouraging and I’ve also had some fascinating conversations along the way; be it discussing fatalism and stoic elements in the Northern character with a Russian expat, or hearing of another man’s path to Canada by way of Berlin after escaping from East Germany.

I’m very grateful to my hosts along the tour for their generous hospitality and logistical support: Linda and Maarten; Joanne and Harold, and Heather; Stacey and Dave; Tim and Ellie; and Tracey - profound thanks for your kindness and friendship!

Now on to Watrous, Saskatchewan!

Stay tuned.
